THEODOSIA MARCHANT

Theodosia Marchant was born in Athens, Greece. She studied law in London and obtained a Bachelor's and Masters in Law. She practiced as a UK and EU registered attorney for several years before relocating in 2013 to Los Angeles with her partner. 

In 2019 she had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Domestic Animals | Life in 16 Frames (Fathom Gallery) and The World of Others (Gallery 825). Selected US and international group exhibitions include Hajimemashite (Bridge Mogura Gallery, Tokyo, 2023), Unprecedented Reality (Artual Gallery, Beirut, 2022), The Greatest American Art Form (Court Tree Collective, NY, 2022), 10th Edition of Millerntor Gallery (Curare l Skateboarding x Art, Germany, 2022), I of LA (Mash Gallery, LA, 2020), Powerhouse with Patti Astor (Shockboxx Project, LA, 2019), Out There (Gallery 825+City of West Hollywood, LA, 2019), LA Art Show (bG Gallery 2019), Pulse of LA (SoLA Gallery, 2018) and others. Theodosia has upcoming Beirut, London, and Cyprus solo and group shows. In May 2021, she was a guest speaker at Glendale Community College. Marchant often juries and curates shows for art partner Shockboxx Project Gallery.

近日Madonna通过IG STORIES推荐Cynthia Nixon与 Girls Girls Girls 杂志合作的有关性别歧视的短片,”Be a Lady, They said!”。视频引起广泛网络讨论,对于“be a lady”这个话题, 我们来看一看来自世界各地的当代艺术家们有着怎样不同的表达。  BE A LADY, BE BRAVE 游击队女孩,美国艺术家,《Do Women Have to be Naked to Get into the Met. Museum?》   1989年,一群活跃在纽约艺术圈的女性艺术家联合起来,揭露这个行业里的男性至上主义和画廊、美术馆对女性艺术家的歧视。她们自称游击队女孩儿(Guerrilla Girls),面戴橡胶制的大猩猩面具以掩盖自己的身份。游击队女孩儿在纽约的公交车上拿出了印有“女人一定要裸体才能进大都会艺术博物馆吗?”的广告,这句口号被打在安格尔1814年的传世巨作《大宫女》(Odalisque)的画面上,问题直指美术馆收藏品中的裸体人物85%都是女性,而女艺术家却只占5%。   30年来,游击队女孩始终致力于揭露艺术世界的性别不平等现象。而今,很多问题已经得到了改观,也有很多并未改变。但由于她们勇敢的表达,人们开始真正的重视起女性的权益以及女性的现状并作出改变。作为女性,我们要勇敢的为自己发声。     BE A LADY, BE FREE   在很多人的眼里,中东国家是对女性非常严苛的地方,女性必须穿戴黑袍,传统的只能露出眼睛。伊朗艺术家Shadi Ghadirian 《Qajar》系列(1998-2001)这些女性都身着19世纪伊朗卡扎尔王朝风格的衣服。而肖像照中的背景道具,都是在当时的摄影棚里找到的旧物。她希望通过这组作品表达身处传统与全球化当代性之间的伊朗女性所面对的困境。这组系列中的女性让观者很难确定她们的绝境是属于哪一个时代,或者说哪一个时代都存在这样的绝境。 Shadi Ghadirian,伊朗艺术家,《Qajar》   而在她的另一个系列作品《Like Everyday》中,艺术家试图表达她的一个观点:女人每天都被重复性的劳动所占满,而且,许多女人甚至已经被这些重复性的劳动所定义了。无独有偶,另一位伊朗艺术家Bita Fayyazi Azad,她的一组装置作品《The Grind》,以母亲和婴儿的简单关系,表达生命对于单纯的渴望,以及无法逃脱轮回的宿命。Bita将关注的目光投向于伊朗社会现实中依然存在的性别与身份问题,并渴望用艺术的形式找到贴切的表达。 […]
